This
overseas internship program was organized by the Department of Global Political
Economy at Tamkang University and sent students to internships at NGOs in
Southeast Asian countries. Five students who came to Kuala Lumpur were assigned
to two organizations: SUARAM and Bersih, focusing on human rights issues and
anti-corruption.
The
internships is three-week long and students get to understand the political
ecology of Malaysia. The daily work of the interns, in addition to assisting in
the search for information and making reports on emergencies, is to classify
daily news and classify the news that is consistent with the "Voice of the
People", in preparation for the Malaysian Human Rights Report.
Interns have
the privilege of participating in this press conference and witnessing the historic
moment of "Net Alliance". Interns are required to devote time into
studying the corruption case and read the news daily to keep abreast of the
latest developments.
Kuala Lumpur
is a place where lots of young people have the vision and ambition to
participate in social movement. They have a common passion and vision of the
community. Under their leadership, we have experienced a lot of local life,
including the fasting month and the traditional festivals. Students were given
the opportunity to interact with the residents and feel the joy of doing good.
Students listen to the prayers of the scriptures and understand the Malays’
diet, beliefs, habits and culture.
In addition
to Malay culture, students can look forward to understanding the history of
Chinese in Malaysia, as well as multi-ethnic culture.
People are
often concerned about the issues in Europe and the United States, Japan, and the
Middle East. However, there are strong political, economic, cultural, ethnic
influences from the Southeast Asian. Through this internship, students get a first-hand
experience on the complex intricately linked of relationships between ASEAN
countries
