Things to take note when applying for NGO internships

NGO internships requirements are not less demanding then normal internships. Students need to plan in advance to get an internship in their dream NGO. In fact, more consideration need to be taken when applying for NGO internships. This is to allow more time for research and preparation. As NGO internship locations are often away from the student's home and schools, preparation is key to prevent any culture shock. NGO varies widely in scope and the domain which they operate in. It s therefore important for students to know their interest and apply for internships in NGO that they wish to work as their full-time career

1.   Aim for NGO internship positions that you will consider doing full-time

Internships lay the foundation for a career, especially for seniors who find internship for the purpose of full-time conversion into a permanent role. Choose internships in NGOs that are within your areas of interest to discover your hidden potential and increase the chance of transiting into a career that you enjoy. Do not opt for part-time ad-hoc voluntary stints over internships. Choose something that you will consider taking up as a full-time career

2. Explore personal career goals and understand the workplace

Internships provide a good career exploration period where students begin to understand the NGO culture and learn about the various types of job duties and business units etc. Ask yourself whether you are suitable or adaptive to the working environment and are you able to communicate well with the others. Determine career orientation early and plot career directions by setting personal goals

3. Prepare early

Although the requirements of an intern is lower than a full time position, applying for an internship is just as competitive. It’s never too early to apply for an internship, even in sophomore or junior year. Applying early will allow time for preparation such as travelling plans and accomodations. Some prestigious NGO programs require student to have previous internship experiences; getting an internship early in college will check this box
